First Things Last
Victoria Baths is an Edwardian bath house in Manchester, described when it opened as Manchester's Water Palace. It closed and fell derelict, but was saved from demolition by a group of local campaigners.
I was invited to become artist in residence. Whilst the building's future hung in the balance, one of my first actions was to clean all the brass that remained in the builidng: stair rails, pool side grab rails, turnstiles and signage. It seemed a symbolic act of love and hope againat the odds to polish these parts, whilst the rest of the builing was crumbling. It was also an homage to all the millions of hands that had passed that way.
This project led to my becoming a curator for The Victoria Baths Trust from 2001 - 2014
